GET INVOLVED WITH THE
Mentoring Program
Who are we?
The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) Mentoring Program consists of a group of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and professional scientists/engineers working in industrial and academic settings. The program is sponsored by Stanford VPGE (Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education) and staffed by volunteers from Stanford and the Palo Alto chapter of AWIS. The mentoring program has been actively working with graduate women at Stanford since 1991.
Why join?
This is an excellent venue to interact and network with a diverse group of women scientists in a supportive and informal setting. Plus, the program is an excellent opportunity to give and receive one-on-one mentoring and to expand your professional network.
How does it work?
At the first quarter of the academic year, we take applications for mentees and protegees and pairs them up for 1:1 mentorship. Usually, graduate students get post-docs as mentors, and post-docs get more senior mentors further along in their career paths. The mentor and protégée arrange times to meet one-on-one. The time commitment is flexible, negotiable, and by mutual agreement.
Mentor/mentee pairing is closed for this academic year. We will re-open applications in October 2024.
Our program also hosts various seminars and network meetings on Stanford campus throughout the academic year. Topics may include work-life balance, choosing between a career in academia or industry, job search strategies, professional development (e.g., leadership, networking, working effectively in a team), etc. You are welcome to participate in the our seminars/meetings regardless of whether you are paired as a mentor/protegee.
